PSNA Aug 20, 7-9 pm meeting -- "Essential Workers"

We will have a conversation about  "Essential Workers" -- the folks who are there to feed us, supply us with the goods we need, clean our houses, take care of us, our kids, our parents.

Who are they? How are they paid? Do they have leave? Other benefits? Who protects them? How can we help?

Our participants will include State Senator Pat Jehlen, Kelsey Perkins, District Director for Representative Katherine Clark's office, Becca Gutman, Vice President of Homecare with 1199SEIU, possibly a writer/consultant about childcare issues, Steve Kurland, partner in local restaurants (EVOO and Za) and, possibly, a neighborhood grocery/supply proprietor/worker.

Our intent is to discuss the plight of the folks on the frontline (other than the doctors and nurses we usually hear about), who work because they need the jobs (and most love their jobs), but their employment/their small businesses are now exposed to the pandemic in a way most of us can choose to avoid. Further these workers often do not have the healthcare/savings/paid leave that many of us take for granted and, as has become increasingly obvious, very little societal safety net.

Our neighborhood restaurant owners and local grocers/shop owners are simply part of this vulnerable network, as they are mostly employees themselves (with their life savings on the line) and just a handful of employees away from disaster.

What are the answers? I don't know. However, State Senator Pat Jehlen can tell us what the state is doing (and Kelsey Perkins can tell us what is happening at the federal level).  Our other participants can help us understand the problems they see, and, perhaps, what we can do to help.
